The Influence-Inducing Effect of the Mixture of Inflammatory Exudate and gamma-Globulin on the Skin in Rabbits

Abstract
This study was carried out to ascertain whether there exists certain chemical mediator in inflammatory exudate that makes high molecular substance such as gamma-globulin injurious to tissue. The inflammatory exudates obtained from the abdominal cavity of rabbits experimentally inflamed by croton oil, from the human joint cavity with suppurative inflammation and from the human pleural cavity with tuberculous pleuritis. The mixture of exudate and epinephrine, saline, or serous fluid obtained from the abdominal cavity of normal rabbits and that of exudate and gamma-globulin were injected intradermally into the abdominal skin of normal rabbits and the local cutaneous reactions were observed grscsly at time intervals for 48 hours and some of the skin lesions were examined microscopically.
The results of this study were summarized as follows:
1. The mixture of bovine gamma-globulin and epinephrine evoked Arthus-like reaction in the skin, but that of gamma-globulin and physiological saline solution did not.
2. The inflammation-inducing effect of the mixture of inflammatory exudate and gamma-globulin was more striking than the inflammatory exudate alone.
3. The mixture of the serous fluid from the abdominal cavity of normal rabbit and gamma-globulin had no inflammation-inducing effect.
On the basis of the above it is suggested that in inflammatory exudate there may be certain chemical mediator that makes high molecular substance such as gamma-globulin capable of producing inflammation.
